The Youth Connection's Play In The Park CAMPaign!

Here are some examples on how to take your picture in front a park sign, Thanks to our President & CEO of The Youth Connection, Dr. Grenae Dudley!

Our Play In Th Park CAMPaign project was funded by Detroit-Wayne Mental Health Authority

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) teamed up with The Youth Connection in June 2017 to receive feedback on their newest 5-year Statewide Comprehensive Recreation Plan. The Youth Connection distributed surveys and conducted focus groups to determine, among other things, how satisfied participants were with the state parks and how far they would be willing to travel to a park or recreation area. A summary report of the surveys and focus groups showed Detroit participants were unaware of many of the nearby state parks and recreation sites and that they would be willing to travel on average up to an hour away to visit a park. Armed with this information, The Youth Connection’s I2D2 program is encouraging youth and families to go out and stay active in order to increase physical activity and decrease screen time while enjoying the great outdoors.

To encourage you further we have implemented our Play in the Park Campaign. Camp, Bike, Hike, Kayak, host your next family reunion or picnic in any of our City, County, State or National parks. Be sure to check out any of the 6 listed MDNR parks and recreation areas in the following brochure. The state of Michigan has many beautiful local, county, and state parks to see and The Youth Connection would like to invite you to go out explore and Play in the Park!  Take a picture of yourself in front of the park sign and post it on Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #TYCCAMPaign. The more parks you visit the more chances you have to win our grand prize at next year’s After School/Back-to-School/Off-to-College Fair on August 2018!

Transformation Thursday - Meet Alicia!

Alicia Hubert, TYCCA Youth

Alicia Hubert was a student in The Youth Connection Career Academies in 2015. As a participant in the program, she had an internship with the Detroit Police Department at the Matrix Center. Alicia also earned certifications in First Aid/CPR/AED and completing our I2D2 Nutrition Education program. After graduating from Denby High School earlier this year, she started a full-time job this month and will be switching to part-time in January upon enrollment in the Culinary Arts program at Macomb Community College.

Alicia says “I did a lot of stuff I never did before. At DPD, we met with Chief Craig and other police leadership, took field trips, and learned what officers do on a day-to-day basis. I went camping for the first time as part of the DNR program and that was fun. One of the things I was proud of is going zip-lining – I was very scared but I did it. All of the outdoor activities were very fun – especially the horseback riding.”

The Youth Connection is proud to feature Alicia as a star on the rise. If you would like to help other youth like Alicia, please consider donating to The Youth Connection by clicking here!
